Project Background
In July 2025, a port machinery manufacturer based in Shanghai, China, placed an order with Tiangong Forging for a batch of forged wheels to be used in port cranes. The client required high-strength, wear-resistant wheels with excellent impact toughness, and requested that the parts be supplied in a condition suitable for direct finish machining to shorten production lead time.
Material & Process
Tiangong Forging selected 42CrMo high-quality alloy steel, known for its outstanding performance under heavy load and impact conditions.
The production process included:
Forging — Open-die and free forging to produce wheel blanks with a dense internal structure and no shrinkage defects;
Heat Treatment — tempering to enhance strength, toughness, and wear resistance;
Rough Machining with Allowance — Machining according to customer drawings while reserving proper allowance for final finishing;
Non-Destructive Testing — Ultrasonic testing (UT) to ensure freedom from internal cracks and inclusions;
Delivery — On-time shipment to the Shanghai client for final machining and assembly.
Value Delivered
Through strict process control and quality inspection, Tiangong Forging supplied high-performance forged wheels ready for final machining, significantly improving the client’s production efficiency and reducing machining risks.
